I'm a member of the general public with a miniscule understanding of the production of electricty. I'm not an engineer, but I would like to discuss an idea for producing electricity.
The technique would use a heavy, slow moving object, weighing a few thousand tons, as a mechanical means of running a generator via a set of large gears.
I would prefer not to reveal the nature of the heavy object, but perhaps there may be someone that is willing to identify any flaws and limitations with the use of gears.

Sounds like a Clockwork theory. While producing electricity on the way down ,you would have to use energy to bring it back up.Throw in the energy used to create such object plus the mechanism to produce electricity. The merit of your idea is that you are trying to make a difference .. Many years ago on a mountain not far away from me there was a proposal to put a pump storage electrical project there. Oh they made it sound good ,but we soon seen its many flaws. Besides destroying a wilderness area it tern out that the pumping back up the water to the kake atop the mountain use almost as much energy as it produced.
Did you know that quite a lot of electricity is lost from its point of manufacture to your electrical appliance? Yet we are still using the same ways to transport it we have from the begining. The savings from this would be enormous. Also find a way for more energy savings from out own electical appliences. My point is not to produce more electricity ,but to you what we produce more effiecently. I assure you this can be done this very second by the both of us with no hardship
