We are a wasteful society. Americans consume 25% of the world’s resources yet comprise only 5% of the population. Junk mail epitomizes our wastefulness. Each year, this country generates 4.6 million tons of junk mail. That’s comparable to 78 million trees. Besides being wasteful, junk mail is also a nuisance. But there is a solution. Simply send back those ‘Business Reply Mail’ envelopes with nothing inside while recycling the rest of the junk mail. Businesses must pay postage when you send them back. Besides the personal satisfaction of turning the tables on junk mailers, we can save resources. Businesses will realize it is not profitable to solicit us in this fashion, thereby reducing the amount of junk mail in the long run. They will be paying the U.S Postal Service for the postage, and incur extra cost in processing all those empty envelopes. Second, the US Postal Service (which lost $975 million last year) will experience a financial windfall that won’t come from us paying more for stamps. Another benefit of doing this would be eventually reducing the amount waste that’s clogging our local landfills. Visit our website(www.velvetvisions.com/campaign.html) for more info on these and other issues. So please send back those envelopes and pass this message along to everyone you know. If we all pitch in, it will work.
