I'm really excited about this new site. I just found it today, but I can tell it's brand new. These are issues we need to be talking about. This is much more important than going to sites about TV shows, etc. One way I reduce consumption is by cooking from scratch. Then, all I'm throwing out are things like flour bags (if I can't find some other use for them), butter wrappers (after using them to grease a dish), etc. Of course recyclables get recycled. I also watch my water consumption (turn it off while I soap up my hair, then turn it back on to rinse, for example), never use credit cards so I'm not buying a bunch of stuff I don't need (and probably can't afford!), I plan to cloth diaper my kids and breastfeed, not buy them tons of toys, etc. I also go garage saling, because this is a great way to recycle and get great bargains. I sometimes participate in other's garage sales, which is really getting paid to recycle. I am careful with my stuff so I don't have to replace it as often as the average Joe might. In general, I care about making this planet better for my descendants. It's shameful the amount of resources the average Western citizen uses. Even quite painless changes can make a big difference. So try it!

Hello, Kat. Welcome to Earth Forums. I agree with your methods. I have also found that packaged foods are just garbage generators and are generally more expensive than their unpackaged counterparts.
I have also found, after reviewing most aspects of my life and reducing waste, that I need a lot less money to be comfortable so I can work less and have more time for gardening and other relaxing activities.
It is my opinion that our society is going full-speed down a dead-end track. However, I also believe we must lead by example. So, I live my humble life the best I can.
Thank you for your post!

i take pleasure in little things such as telling the grocery clerk that i don't need a bag at all (they always try to give me one). i too like to try to reuse things. i saw a place the other day that had used old shoes for pots to grow plants in. just shoes full of dirt and big plants in them. i hope more people will adopt ideas that conserve and reuse...there are some many ways it can be done that are not taken advantage of...people are just too busy sitting in traffic to care about these things...
