There are two nuclear waste issues which need you immediate action, and it will only take a couple of minutes. 1)Radioactive metal is being sold by the Department of Energy to scrap-metal dealers. These materials are slated to end up in consumer products such as silverware, cars, and pots and pans. Write to your members of Congress, urging them to introduce legislation prohibiting the use of radioactive waste products in any type of commercial or business product! You can do so easily at http://www.greenmatters.com in the Activism Made Easy department.
2)Electric Utilities belonging to the Nuclear Energy Institute make large financial contributions to Congress to encourage new laws that would favor the nuclear industry and weaken evinronmental policy making it easier for them to get rid of their nuclear waste. The federal governement has designated Yucca Mountain, Nevada as the final resting place for 98% of the U.S.'s radioactive waste. Nevermind that the mountain belongs to the Shoshone Nation under a U.S. treaty, or that transporting 90,000 shippments across U.S. highways and railways will result in an estimated 268 accidents, potentially exposing Americans to the radioactive waste.
Utility companies should be responsible for storing nuclear waste on there own property under strict regulation by the Environmental Protection Agency. Transport is too dangerous. Please take the two minutes necessary to take action on this issue at http://www.greenmatters.com
