When you have designed your home for maximum Solar Utilization and Superinsulated it,then you can recycle all organic wastes including HUMANURE so that you are actually improving the Earth around you, then catch the Rain that Falls in a cistern and use it wisely, then use the Wind and Sun for your Electricity and you will be free from monthly utility bills and you will be living in harmony with your Environment in your own Clean benign Habitat.

Thanks dslc1000,i have read Michaels books. i like his concepts very much but i have an idea for an adobe house clad on the north, east and west side with strawbales to make it Superinsulated and then i'll catch the rain and i'm just thinking of using a simple way of wastetreatment via composting, have you checked out"the Humanure Book"and website by Joe Jenkins?.I'll probably use Windpower, its cheaper.there are many ways to sustainability

Well, all the best with your plans for the adobe house diogenes; I hope it works out well for you. If I ever manage to get my own place, I think wind would quite likely be a very important energy source for me, as my part of the world isn't very sunny unfortunately. I was very impressed with the earthship website when I first found it, and still am. I hadn't heard of Joe Jenkins and his book until now to be honest, but I've just done a search, found his web page, and have just glanced at the last chapter of his book. I'll bookmark that one!

Hi ds1c1000,ihope you find good info from the jenkins publishing webpage..I would also recommend a great website called BIOREALIS by Bob Crosby, his projects include his own BioHome in eagle river alaska, you can take a phototour of that home and read his other projects and goals,,Since you will probably want to Superinsulate there is another web page by Wolverton Environmental Solutions who works at NASA on Bioregenerative Lifesupport

Dr.Wolverton has advocated that Superinsulate d homes use many Houseplants,12 per person to clean and oxygenate the air rather than the heat recovery air to air heat exchangers in use since these heat exchangers consume alot of electricity,of course, bathrooms and kitch- ens must vent moisture out,but a couple fans are all that is needed, and then only when in use..look up"Superinsulation"or Superinsulate d Houses"and"Passive Solar".

I just had a look at the BIOREALIS website, and agree with much of their philosophy - esp. that freely distributing the information required to actually build the relevant systems is a good thing. I'd like to do more research into this when I can afford to - then all I need is the plot of land on which to build the house . Thanks for the info.
