Did you know that the White House Office of Management and Budget has recommended eliminating funding for some of the only federal programs specified for environmental education (EE)? These cuts include:
The entire Office of Environmental Education (OEE)—$9.2 million in funding, including an estimated $3 million in grants and $1.8 million in contracts that the OEE distributed to the EE field last year. Critical funding for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of Education and Sustainable Development, including $2.5 million for its Environmental Literacy Grants Program.
Research shows that Americans have only a superficial awareness of both the importance of the environment to their daily lives as well as the impact of human behavior on the environment.
Thus, this funding is critical to addressing our nation’s environmental literacy gap, especially since the federal government already provides so little funding for environmental education (currently less than an estimated $.48 per person per year!!).
Please join the Campaign for Environmental Literacy in combating America’s environmental ignorance! Our goal here is simple: to help the entire EE community organize a collective response to these funding cuts.
We’ve succeeded before in restoring EPA EE funding in 2002, 2003, and 2004 by making our voices heard. And we can do it again, if you'll just give 2 minutes of your time.
Please send an email to your Members of Congress, calling for restoration of our funding. Then, spread the word to your friends! Just go to the Campaign for Environmental Literacy’s Action Center.
Thank you for your support. YOU can truly make the difference.
Sincerely,
Jim Elder and Marialanna Lee
