Our Endangered Species Act (ESA) is under attack by industries who see it as an impedement to making profits. Industries such as petrochemical, mining, timber, real estate and agribusiness, have joined alliances and together have donated 16.5 million dollars to our Congress in an effort to win anti-environmental support and weaken the ESA.

Each species, that means us too, is dependent upon other species for survival. The longterm effects of losing about 100 species each day cannot be ignored or underestimated. The epidemic extinction that we are currently experiencing (about 10,000 times the natural rate) endangers our water, air and food chain.

Two of the leading causes of wildlife and plant extinction are destruction of habitat and pollution. Industries such as those mentioned above play a major role in habitat destruction and pollution. These industries are the most "inconvenienced" by our government's attempts to protect some 950 endangered species and their habitats. These industries are pushing hard for the weakening of ESA protections so that they can have free reign to increase production and conduct business with little regard for the wildlife its activities push to extinction.

Send an email to Seceretary of Interior, Bruce Babbitt, and tell him what the ESA means to you. mailto:bruce_babbitt@ios.doi.gov

I agree with everything you said and I will voice my priority in preserving habitat and limiting pollution for the preservation of our delicate ecosystem and all of its wonderful creatures.

However, these numbers throw me. Its not the first time I've seen them but I would like some clarification. I'm guessing the "100 species/day" is worldwide? If it were this country, alone, then I guess we'd have about 10 days before all 950 of our endangered species were gone and another 1000 were in the queue. Something about this doesn't compute.

I am asking this in sincerity, if someone can shed some light on these numbers I would be grateful.

In the mean time, it surely cannot hurt to express the importance of preserving our ecosystem.

Thank you, C. Trask, for your post.

Doug
