Urge the EPA to Clean Up Diesel Trucks and Buses. Tests have shown that diesel engines generate up to 100 times more tiny pollutant particles than from similar-size gas engines. They remain airborne for larger periods of time, depositing themselves in greater number and are tiny enough to lodge deep in the lungs. Repeated exposure to smog may permanently injure lungs. Diesel soot, in particular, has recently been singled out as the predominant cancer threat in urban air.
The EPA has proposed new standards for diesel engines and diesel fuel that will dramatically reduce pollution from diesel vehicles. However, industry will be lobbying to weaken these standards. It is NECESSARY to write the EPA (mailto:diesel@epa.gov)and tell them that you support their new standards, and want them to go even further by requiring cleaner trucks and buses sooner than 2010, ensuring that trucks will stay clean over their lifetime, and encouraging the use of alternative fuels.
