I am new to the earth forum. However, I wish to state something very strongly concerning the way in which the turtles and the turtle nesting rookery at Gahirmata, Orissa, India has been handled. The entire gamut of operations is in shambles. From several million nestings about seven years ago, this year records only 45,000 nestings. What a pity! Inspite of several well-funded NGOs, a large number of world famous turtle experts and researchers, a couple of turtle trusts, several International Sea Turtle Symposiums, the Union Ministry of Environment & Forests -- Government of India, The Wildlife Institute of India ---- Dehradun, the Orissa Marine Fisheries Corporation, the Orissa Forest Department, the deepsea trawlers and its associations, the Indian navy, and the Indian coast guard, this once-upon-a-time world's largest turtle nesting rookery has been reduced to nought.
What should be done about this grave misadventure? Any suggestions?
Turtleman
